In California, there are 58 separate grand juries, one in each county. The California Grand Jury system was established in 1851 with the adoption of the Criminal Practice Act. The system provides for one Grand Jury for each County.

The Grand Jury is an investigative body that is responsible for conducting independent oversight of local government. The Grand Jury has the authority to subpoena witnesses, documents, and records, and to issue reports and recommendations on its findings.
